Joint Design Joint and Shell Placement

The Knee joint is the most complex of all the joints in the human body. Motion at the knee joint occurs in four of the six degrees of freedom. Using the right handed GCS convention adopted by the ISB, the motion is a combination of:

• Rotation around the z-axis
• Rotation around the y-axis
• Rotation around the x-axis
• Translation along the x-axis

To review the instantaneous centre of rotation of the knee throughout the gait cycle, review Module 1: Normal Anatomy
